Nakład wyprzedany, ostatni egzemplarz Beethoven's works for piano and violoncello were written between 1796 and 1815. The Sonatas op. 5 for piano and independently conducted cello voice, premiered by Jean-Louis Duport, are dedicated to Friedrich Wilhelm II of Prussia. They represent - as do the enchanting variations on themes by Mozart and Handel - the first phase in Beethoven's oeuvre, while his op. 69 can stand for the second. Finally, the two sublime Sonatas op. 102, with their unprecedented stylistic freedom, bear witness to the style of the last decade of his life.
