The power-conscious Jean-Baptiste Lully, to put it mildly, obtained from Louis XIV as surintendat de la musique du roi practically a nationwide monopoly on opera performances of all kinds and thus prevented the development of annoying competition in this field. Among those who suffered was the gifted Marc-Antoine Charpentier (1643-1704), who until Lully's death in 1687 was inevitably allowed to live out all his musical-dramatic creativity only in less representative vocal music with a small cast. These "mini operas", which look like scenes from larger dramatic works, also include Orphée descendant aux enfers. Gerard Lesne and Il Seminario musicale have recorded further secular vocal works by the composer on their CD, which Charpentier composed for the soirees of the music-loving Duchesse de Guise.
