The Israeli organist Yuval Rabin’s doctoral dissertation on C.P.E. Bach’s use of varied repeats is here demonstrated on this recording, which captures the lively character of the music together with a spontaneity that comes from improvisation. Rabin’s starting point is the paragraph at the end of Part 1 of Bach’s famous Versuch (1753), which describes the practice. Rabin has extrapolated the principles and used them creatively in this attractive programme of preludes, fugues, trios, minuets and sonatas, recorded on an appropriate historical organ. A most interesting and attractive CD, which combines excellent performances backed up by sound scholarship. • DAVID PONSFORD
