Joseph Marx was once Austria's most distinguished composer, and his fame and authority continued to be unbroken even in the 1950s. It was first after his death in 1964 that his public prestige began to decline and his works began to be forgotten. Nevertheless, the Austrian music history of the twentieth century would not imaginable without Joseph Marx: »One is tempted to say that, if there had not been a Joseph Marx, somebody would have had to invent him in order to give in music what, for example, a Klimt gave in art. Marx's sound world doubtless represents one part of what Austria has to offer in its music. The sumptuous sound world of the art nouveau indeed does belong to what is Austrian, and Marx offers it in its most integral and most compelling form« (Robert Schollum). We are now releasing one of this musical magician's principal chamber compositions: the Trio-Phantasie for piano trio from 1913, a work almost an hour in length. As a special treat we are also presenting his four songs for soprano and chamber ensemble based on (quite erotic!) poems by Anton Wildgans.
