Although the Prélude de Te Deum is his most famous work today, instrumental music played a rather subordinate role in Marc-Antoine Charpentier's oeuvre. The Noëls pour les instruments also enjoy a certain popularity today. The recording is based on the manuscripts and conscientiously takes into account the original instrumentation and Charpentier's instructions for registering the organ. The monumental sonata à huit, in which Charpentier worked with Italian stylistic elements without exposing himself to the danger of a mere copy of the style, is also heard here.
