You know him from our recordings of his chamber music (the piano trios) and his »Prize Symphony, « and a very positive review following these releases stated that they made the listener eager for more discoveries of this kind. Voilà: the first CD featuring songs and piano compositions by Georg Schumann, who for many years was the director of the Sing-Akademie in Berlin and a professor of composition at the Prussian Academy of the Arts. Today he is being rediscovered as a late romanticist, while during his lifetime he was regarded as an exponent of neoromanticism. Along with his rich oeuvre for piano, it was above all his love for lied and choral song that marked his artistic production. Here we are releasing a selection from his more than sixty arias and lieder published from 1888 to 1944 together with selected piano compositions. His Mädchenlieder op. 35 from 1904 to poems by Paul Heyse unquestionably mark a high point in his lied oeuvre. Schumann dedicated them to his wife on the occasion of her birthday. Many of his piano compositions practically amount to »songs without words« and serve as excellent complements to the program formed by this song edition.
