After an intensive study of sources, analysis of musical texts and structural tempos, the Dutch Harke de Roos moves the Temporelations and metronome numbers in a new light with Beethoven. • Beethoven was rather hostile to the invention of the metronome: "It's stupid stuff, you have to feel the tempo." • Thus, according to de Roos, the 2nd Symphony, performed here by the Vienna Symphony Orchestra, has tempos ranging from a third to half a metre of the usual performance practice today.
