Leevi Madetoja is - along with Jean Sibelius, whose pupil he was - one of the most important Finnish composers. Madetoja's Second Symphony, with which, after a late romantic style inspired by Richard Strauss, finds its very own tonal language, deals with the contrast between the beauty of nature and the intrusion of the Finnish Civil War of 1918. In the symphonic Poem "Kullervo" describes Madetoja the antihero of the same name of the Finnish national epic Kalevala. The exceptional Finnish artist John Storgårds has taken the world of classical music by storm. Since 2008 he has been Principal Conductor of the Helsinike Philharmonic Orchestra and since 2012 Principal Guest Conductor of the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra.
