»What quartet musician's heart does not leap for joy when he hears the name of Antonín Dvorák? This productive composer who never denied his Bohemian musician's blood, who rose from the rank of a simple orchestra musician to the post of conservatory director in New York and Prague, has created highly splendid string quartets, all of which are a great delight to play.« This was the wonderfully old-fashioned formulation with which Wilhelm Altmann began the Dvorák chapter in his Handbuch für Streichquartettspieler in the 1920s. But he was right: Dvorák's quartets number among the gems of their genre. A new recording by one and the same ensemble is long overdue, and the fact that the Vogler Quartet has taken on this gigantic task is very good luck indeed. The Vogler Quartet is a phenomenon. Its membership has remained unchanged since 1985, and over the years the individual and team talent of its musicians has secured them a place among the world's top chamber ensembles.
