Gilse: Symphony No. 4, Concert Overture, Funeral Music

Our rediscovery of a Dutch composer of truly major significance from the early twentieth century continues. Jan van Gilse's Symphony No. 4 was premiered on 28 November 1915, with the composer himself conducting the Concertgebouw Orchestra. And after this great performance success his publisher printed a hundred scores (though van Gilse had to cover the costs), and so it was that his powerful and individual fourth symphony was not forgotten. In fact, it became one of his most performed works – this in contrast to his Concert Overture, which appeared on concert programs only five times in 1900, the year of its composition, but then almost completely, wrongly so, disappeared from the stage. Adversities during World War II – the composer too had to go into the underground in mid-1942 – meant that van Gilse's Funeral Music on the Death of Uilenspiegel had to wait until after the war for its first performance by the Concertgebouw Orchestra. Eduard van Beinum conducted it in memory of the late composer.
