In 1726 Handel's opera company had achieved a sensational coup: with Faustina Bordoni, Francesca Cuzzoni and Senesino, the three best, most famous and above all most expensive singers of their time appeared on stage together for the first time. The technically demanding roles of the three main characters of "Alessandro" are also the main reason why the opera has been rather neglected until now. As part of the 2012 Karlsruhe Handel Festival, a first-class stage production of the opera took place with a first-class cast and much acclaimed by the press, which gave us a veritable firework display of baroque bel canto.
