Furtwängler completed the composition of the extensive First Violin Sonata in D minor in 1935, and the work was premiered on 4 March 1937 in the Gewandhaus in Leipzig. The violinist was Hugo Kolberg, then concertmaster of the Berliner Philharmoniker. Furtwängler took over the piano part himself. The criticism of this evening includes the movement "Passionately blazing musical obsession and highest artistic intention are in constant interplay and lend the sonata stylistic ambiguity, behind which there is only an incessant struggle for the highest spiritual truth".
