opis
It was around the 11th century that the process of Islamization of the country began, led by the Almoravids (who ruled the Maghreb and Muslim Spain in the 11th and 12th centuries). It was not until the end of the 19th century that Islam imposed itself definitively in the form of Sufism, organized in brotherhoods (tarîqa) led by spiritual masters (marabouts). The most important, Tijâniyya and Murîdiyya, respectively radiate from the holy cities of Tivaouane and Touba. Mainly based on the modal system of the Arab maqâm, the hymns performed are carried by very tense chest voices, with generous ornamentation. The body of texts is particularly impressive: the only manuscripts of the founder of the Murîdiyya are estimated at 7.5 tons.
