opis
Gunar Letzbor and his Ars Antiqua Austria hold a special treasure on their latest musical journey of discovery: Benedikt Anton Aufschnaiter's Dulcis fidium harmonia , eight church sonatas that were printed in 1703 as his Opus 4 in Augsburg. The collection bears eloquent testimony to the exceptionally high level of compositional technique in Baroque Vienna, for the works were created there, in the vicinity of the Kaiserhof and its Kapellmeister Johann Joseph Fux and Antonio Caldara. The elaborate sonatas introduce the multi-colored pageantry, especially in the wonderful interpretation of Ars Antiqua Austria. • Letzbor, however, follows the principle, which has become more and more prevalent in recent times, of occupying each voice only as a soloist; Affetti Musicali presented itself in the (technically clearly inferior) first recording of the 1997 works, in contrast, with twelve musicians. Although the solo cast also historically in the realm of the possible move things in Fuxens Vienna but quite different. Just Aufschnaiter is a performance-practical testimony handed down: In a letter to his new employer, the Prince Bishop Johann Philipp Graf von Lamberg Passau, he later complained about the poor quality of the musicians now available to him, thereby raising his earlier performances in Vienna as a positive antipole, where he at least "produced music with [...] 16 or 18 but perfect musicianis" . Thus, seven years ago, Michi Gaigg's decision to record the suites from Aufschnaiter's Opus 1 (Concors Discordia) with 17 musicians was historically much more correct; the rich, multi-colored sound comes closer to the baroque opulence. • Musically, however, in the present recording everything is ordered to the best. The sound of Ars Antiqua Austria, not least of Gunar Letzbor on the first violin, is pleasantly voluminous with ever-present, silvery shimmering overtones. Yours contributes to the cast of the basso continuo with violone, organ and narrative. The flexibility in dynamics, intonation and stroke sometimes surprises, but the game always remains balanced. All in all, this creates a very varied picture of this great music, which will hopefully find the deserved broad interest of the Baroque music lovers. • Olaf crown
