opis
Even well into the 19th century Johannes Eccard of Mühlhausen was celebrated as an 'ideal composer of true church music'. Brahms, for example, placed his works on a par with those of Gabrieli and Schütz. And in 1965 Friedrich Blume wrote that 'Eccard's compositional technique became exemplary for centuries to come. Bach's chorales are inconceivable without it.' After Mühlhausen, to which he maintained lifelong ties, Eccard's professional career took him to Weimar, Munich (as a pupil of Orlando di Lasso), Augsburg (in the service of the Fugger family), Königsberg and finally Berlin. He can rightly be called one of the founding fathers of Protestant church music. To celebrate the 400th anniversary of his birth, cpo has joined forces with the city of Mühlhausen to present a many-faceted CD portrait of this early master that sheds light on the sharply contrasting genres of his output – from the marvellous five-voice Mass to such popular song collections as the Preussische Festlieder.
