The premiere of Ernest Chausson's Concerto in D major was a great triumph for the composer. And not only because the famous Eugène Ysaye had played the solo violin, but also because both listeners and critics had recognized in the work a piece of music of exceptional intensity, passion and unforgettable beauty. It is very difficult to assign the concert to a certain genre: Chausson's composition is by no means one of the conventionally worked chamber music works, but it is certainly one of the most important works of the French repertoire.
