The Venetian Baldassare Galuppi has become particularly well known as a pioneer of opera buffa in northern Italy. As a keyboard instrumentalist, Galuppi was also extremely popular among his contemporaries, but his surprisingly numerous sonatas remained largely unpublished, circulated as handwritten copies throughout Europe, but are almost unknown today. These delightful and charming sonatas, usually comprising two or three movements, move stylistically between Domenico Scarlatti and the young Mozart with their juxtaposition of elegance and bravura, of melancholy and exuberance. Matteo Napoli is an internationally acclaimed pianist. For Naxos he has already made several other critically acclaimed recordings.
