Born in Poland, Alexander Tansman moved to France in 1919, where he was soon celebrated as one of the most prominent European composers and musicians of his generation. His Jewish origins forced him into American exile via Lisbon at the beginning of the Second World War, where he - like many of his colleagues - composed for the film. His friendship with Igor Stravinsky influenced his work audibly. Tansman returned to Paris in 1946. His 24 intermezzi, written during the escape from France, are an intimate and haunting musical diary. All 32 pieces recorded for this CD by the award-winning pianist Eliane Reyes are world premiere recordings of Tansman's compositions.
