A considerable part of Reger's oeuvre consists of his chamber music; along with his organ works, it forms the most important part of his oeuvre in terms of content. Johannes Brahm was always a model for Reger, whereby both revered each other and even exchanged their photos.
However, the audacious modulations and intricate voice leading, the expressive dynamics and the filigree melodic line make Reger's tonal language unmistakable and make him unmistakable as a composer of the 20th century. The two early sonatas op. 49 are distinguished by their almost impressionistic, witty character, while the sonata op. 107 contrasts with their introverted elegance.
