It took André-Modeste Grétry only a few years to become one of the most famous personalities in the French music world. The great successes that he achieved with his first "Opéra comique" Le Huron (1769) earned him the highest esteem and personal friendship of the Duke and made him presentable at court, where some of his works were subsequently performed. In 1773, his status was reinforced when Louis XV commissioned him to compose a large-scale work for a special occasion: the birth of Céphale et Procris.
