Franz Schmidt dedicated his Third Symphony, written in 1927-28, not only to the Vienna Philharmonic, the Work was also performed by this orchestra, in which the composer himself had been active from 1896 to 1911, premiered. This most intimate and lyrical of Schmidt's symphonies, which he himself considered his best, was overlooked by of the Columbia Gramophone Company in New York as the best symphony in the spirit of Schubert's Incomplete excellent.
Franz Schmidt is also rightly regarded as a forerunner of the organ movement, since he was the orchestral organ of the Romantic period (including the swell) has decisively rejected. In 1931 Schmidt added percussion and wind instruments to his Chaconne for organ.
Thework was also premiered in this form by the Vienna Philharmonic.
