On 11 April 1713, the Peace of Utrecht brought to an end the War of the Spanish Succession, which had expanded from a dispute between the Habsburgs and Bourbons to a serious European crisis. Reason enough to order a festive Te Deum and Jubilate from the 27-year-old Georg Friedrich Händel, who had just settled in London, in advance; he performed the plays on 7 July 1713 with the Chapel Royal in St. Paul's Cathedral. Hardly a week later, at a celebration of the Peace of Utrecht in Oxford, the Ode With Noise of Cannon by William Croft, Handel's colleague at the Chapel Royal, sounded.
