The fascination of the three sonatas for viola da gamba lies in the dialogue between the old and the new. As an aristocratic instrument of the Baroque period, the viola da gamba here speaks the language of musical renewal, of sensitivity. True to the composer's musical ideals, music should no longer depict affects in a distanced way, but rather translate feelings into music in order to touch the listener directly. C. P. E. Bach makes full use of the instrument's possibilities: Chord breaks, polyphonic passages contrast with elegiac melodies, virtuosity with simplicity. Gambist Friederike Heumann chose a fortepiano as the accompanying instrument for her recording, as this combination is more suitable than any other for expressing the music as a "language of sensations". She's right!
