opis
Pierre-Auguste-Louis Blondeau (1784-1865) is largely forgotten today, although in his day he was a recognized figure as a composer, brilliant theoretician and music historian. A student of Gossec and Mehul, he was one of the first to win the coveted Prix de Rome, which enabled him to spend a longer period of time in Italy. His successful arrangements of the piano sonatas op. 2 by Ludwig van Beethoven were published in Paris in 1808 and are dedicated to none other than Joseph Haydn, who was always particularly admired by the French. The French Quatuor ad fontes is now well known for its extraordinary discoveries in the string quartet repertoire of the Viennese Classical period, and we can once again blindly trust his flair for musical treasures.
