The European dance world loves Hans van Manen. His very personal secret is that he knows how to humanize even abstract-concert dance, to fill it with warmly pulsating humanity. In this way, however, he has also emancipated the dance-sensitive, mature ballet spectator, who is called upon to discover the story behind the dance in his storyless ballets - to complete the ballet in his imagination, so to speak. As one of the most important choreographers of our time, Hans van Manen primarily ties in with the tradition of 'modern dance'; there is no pointe dancing, no pirouettes or other typical ballet-classical elements such as tulle skirts or romantic stories; instead, the repertoire is more strongly oriented towards everyday gestures than the choreographies of traditional ballet and appeals to our knowledge of these gestures.
