•Toch: String Quartet No. 8 • Toch: String Quartet No. 9While the 5-movement Quartet op. 18 of 1910, despite some experimental phases, is still tonally bound throughout and largely traditionally composed, the ninth quartet caused a great stir and also offence with the public at its Mannheim premiere in 1920 due to a tonal language that Toch greatly renewed. He composed this work after the end of the First World War and after his own five-year creative hiatus. In this quartet, the composer increasingly breaks away from tonality until there is no tonal center to be found in the finale. And the "jagged" melodic writing with the large intervallic leaps already identifies Toch as a pioneer of new music. Powerful music, to which the Verdi Quartet - like the Buchberger Quartet on Vol. 1 devotes itself with much musical verve and rhythmic energy.
