Niels Otto Raasted was one of the leading church musicians in Denmark of his time. After goldsmith's trade, he studied organ in Leipzig with Karl Straube and Max Reger Straube and Max Reger, studying organ and composition respectively. He kept in touch with Straube and other german musicians throughout his life. The five sonatas for solo violin Op. 18 and 30 were written during Raasted's years in Odense, where he had been employed since 1915 at the Frauenkirche since 1915 and worked energetically to improve the musical standard Standards. Raasted leaned very closely on Johann Sebastian Bach, a serious, if not exactly progressive role model. Thus, his sonatas for solo violin, which are all of which can be heard here as world premiere recordings, unfold an idiomatic neo-baroque style.
