+Bonus: Inside "The Giacomo Variations" (Dokumentation & Interviews)
Giacomo Casanova earned a doctorate in law, made a living as a theater violinist, tried his hand at being a lieutenant and was a co-founder of the French lotteries. What made Giacomo Casanova world-famous, however, was his reputation as a lover of countless women, a globetrotter and a bon vivant. His memoirs "Histoire de ma vie", written from 1790 onwards, are still fascinating and make Casanova synonymous with the art of seduction to this day!
Michael Sturminger and Martin Haselböck revisit Casanova's themes and create a contemporary approach to a phenomenon with their new chamber opera "The Giacomo Variations". In exciting juxtapositions, we meet Casanova - alternately portrayed by Hollywood star John Malkovich and baritone Florian Boesch - to witness his very personal review of his life in the face of his approaching death. Casanova relives encounters full of longing and passion with countless women and suddenly has to face his greatest fear: dying before he can find out what he has lived for. Casanova's contemporaries Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Lorenzo Da Ponte provide the "soundtrack" to this extraordinary spectacle of human emotions with some of the most beautiful arias of their joint work.
