opis
Alonso Xuárez (1640-1696) was a prominent Spanish composer of the Baroque era. Born in Toledo, Xuárez's musical genius blossomed early, and soon he held important musical posts at the Cuenca Cathedral and as Chapel Master of the Sevilla Cathedral.

Xuárez's sacred choral compositions exemplify the grandeur and emotion characteristic of the Baroque style. His works were deeply rooted in the rich traditions of Spanish sacred music, reflecting a profound sense of devotion and spirituality.

The hallmark of Xuárez's choral music was his adept ability to interweave soaring melodies, intricate counterpoint, and lush harmonies, transporting listeners to a realm of divine contemplation.

Xuárez's most significant contributions lie in his sacred motets, hymns, and masses. His sacred motets, in particular, stood out for their passionate expression and deeply emotive qualities, eliciting a profound connection between the music, the text, and the spiritual essence. These polychoral works present different groups of singers, and often feature solo passages adorned with virtuosic ornamentation. The instrumental accompaniment consists of harp, viola da gamba and organ.

Superb performances by the Spanish vocal ensemble Amystis, specialized in presenting hidden gems from the Spanish Renaissance and Baroque. Their previous recordings for Brilliant Classics with works by Cabanilles (BC 94781), De Ribera (BC96409), Navarro (BC95905) and Comes (BC95231) gained excellent critical acclaim in the international press. Early Music Review: ‘Amystis are worthy exponents of this glorious music, negotiating its considerable complexity with aplomb.”
