These sessions were recorded exactly 2 years apart, in early November 1966 and 1968 (both were released in 1969). Although they can by no means be called "bookends," they do depict a remarkable period in Don Cherry's musical development, on his journey from the more austere jazz environment, adventurous as it was, of Ornette Coleman, Albert Ayler, and others, to a philosophy that embraced many non-Western traditions. These included veafrican forms, especially those from West and Central Africa. Cherry extended his research to North Indian music and, as brilliantly demonstrated in "Eternal Rhythm," to the percussion music of Southeast Asia. • Brian Olewnick
