Since 1997 cpo has released a number of Schuetz discs in euphonious and emotionally stirring interpretations by the WESER-RENAISSANCE under its conductor Manfred Cordes. All of these discs continue to be listed in our catalogue and have met with positive resonance from the press. And so it is now our pleasure to add Schuetz's Musical Exequies to our program. This sacred musical work for vocal parts and basso continuo composed by Schütz on the occasion of the death of his prince Heinrich Posthumus Reuß offers an alternative to the Latin exequies of the Catholic Church in the manner of a Lutheran German mass. In addition to the exequies, the disc includes splendid settings of seven Penitential Psalms selected from two collections, the Becker Psalter and the Psalms of David. The interpreters once again negotiate an ideal compromise between historical precision and the standards to be met and set in the convincing and vibrant interpretation of sacred music.
