Sacred music has always enjoyed a very special place in Capriccio’s catalogue, right from the label’s founding. Initially, there were recordings of the most famous boys’ choirs in the former GDR (the Dresden Boys’ Choir and the Thomanerchor Leipzig), followed by those to the west (the Vienna Boys’ Choir, the Tölz Boys’ Choir and the Regensburger Domspatzen) and proceeding to artists such as the Rheinische Kantorei directed by Hermann Max. These choral ensembles filled gaps in the catalogue with highly interesting performances of cantatas and oratorios by composers such as Zelenka, Hasse, Telemann and Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach.

This first of four Capriccio 10-CD Anniversary Boxes includes many remastered recordings which had become unavailable, as well as a representative selection of recordings of both niche and standard repertoire.
