opis
The Graun Brothers, »fiery instrumental composers« who occupied important posts in the Berlin Royal Orchestra, numbered among the most famous musicians of their times and were known far beyond Berlin and Potsdam. In the field of chamber music its was the genre of the »trio sonata« for two violins and basso continuo that was of special interest to the two brothers. Here they were completely in their element: violin parts full of technical and virtuosic nuances, rhythmically electrifying formulations, a dialogue of the instruments verging on a contrapuntal conversation. We have now recorded five of these masterpieces preserved in Dresden with members of Les Amis de Philippe. Owing to the brief ascriptions »del Sig. re Graun« or »di Graun,« it is unfortunately not always possible to assign the compositions to one or the other brother. These works from around 1750-55 nevertheless show how magnificently the Grauns had developed as composers of chamber music.
