"George Baker is one of the most brilliant of the many outstanding organists who've come out of Southern Methodist University. But having won the major competitions and gone on to a doctorate in organ performance, he got a medical degree and started practicing dermatology. Lately, though, he has returned to the organ with new zeal and even begun to revive his concert career.

Here, he adds a volume to Naxos' survey of the complete organ works of the great French organist-composer Marcel Dupre (1886-1971). The 79 Chorales , 10 of which are included here, are student pieces, albeit beautifully crafted in a neo-Bachian idiom, and the hefty tone poem Vision rambles. But the Second Symphony is a flashy, spiky showpiece, and Zephyrs , a reconstruction of one of Dupre's famous improvisations, is an exhilarating scherzo-toccata.
