As early as 1711 Graupner received the appointment as court kapellmeister in Darmstadt. His work focused on sacred vocal music, which explains the sheer abundance of over 1400 cantatas. In 1723, the magistrate of the city of Leipzig was eager to engage Graupner as the new cantor, but a veto by his employer prevented this. Bach thus took the position instead of Graupner, the latter, highly famous during his lifetime, fell into oblivion after his demise. The judgment of his contemporaries, however, seems to us today, as the work is gradually being sifted through, more relevant than ever. The present recording spans the liturgical arc from Maundy Thursday to Good Friday to Easter Sunday to Easter Monday and lets one work for the liturgy of each feast day be heard as a world premiere recording.
