opis
During his career as a conductor Felix Mendelssohn occupied himself more frequently with Handel’s oratorio Israel in Egpyt than with any other work. As a great admirer of Handel and early music, Mendelssohn successfully returned this work to the performance stage at the Lower Rhine Musical Festival in Düsseldorf on 26 May 1833 – and other performances would follow. Mendelssohn had discovered the score of the oratorio in London, and his performance was distinguished by his critical examination of the available editions on the basis of these original sources. The label »after the original score« first found use in conjunction with the Düsseldorf performance. In addition, with assistance from the London conductor George Smart, an old libretto was found that, according to Mendelssohn, had »been used under Handel.« The thoroughly positive newspaper reviews of Mendelssohn’s performances above all praised »the clear expression, which is so rarely taken into consideration.«
