Wanda Landowska, born in Warsaw in 1879 and died in Lakeville, Connecticut, in 1959, is one of the most extraordinary musicians of the 20th century. When Landowska grew up and made music her life's work, the whole world considered the harpsichord to be the surviving predecessor of the modern piano, far inferior to the modern grand piano, because of its "unpleasant and little formative sound", even for playing the music of the "old masters". In 1899 Landowska played on such a harpsichord for the first time, succumbed to its peculiar sound, had her own instrument built by the Pleyel piano company and became a tireless champion of the harpsichord for the rest of her life
