This new recording contrasts one of the most recent concert compositions by the Finnish composer Einojuhani Rautavaara with a work from his early modernist period. Rautavaara is considered one of the most important Finnish composers after Jean Sibelius. His recordings, released by the label Ondine, have become bestsellers and have won numerous awards. The Cello Concerto, consisting of a single, 20-minute movement with which Rautavaara captured a feeling of eternity, was written for the cellist Truls Mørk.
The Scot Colin Currie is not only the soloist in the percussion concert entitled Incarnations, Rautavaara also dedicated the concert to him. The cadenza in the last movement also comes from the soloist Currie.
