In the 17th century, the Hanseatic cities of Hamburg and Lübeck were the most important centres of music in northern Germany, and the organist positions of the great churches of both cities ensured their owners from the outset a fame that extended far beyond their respective city walls. In Lübeck, Dietrich Buxtehude worked at St. Mary's Church from 1668 until his death in 1707. Johann Adam Reinken held the post of organist at St. Catherine's Church in Hamburg from 1663 until his death in 1722.
