In this recording, Couperin's famous Leçons de Ténèbres undergo a fundamental reinterpretation: the texts of these liturgical works for Holy Week are taken from the Old Testament, and Jean-Christophe Frisch places this haunting music in the context of lamentations from the Jewish and Muslim traditions. Thus on this CD, in the gesture of lamentation, a moving union of the three sister religions takes place, all of which believe in the same God and yet have so often been irreconcilably opposed to each other in their history and have still not found peace with each other today.
