The sacred compositions of the younger Haydn are among the masterpieces of the genre of his time. Among them are the 35 masses he composed - four of which can be heard on this CD. He wrote the works sung in Latin as late as 1763, before he moved to Salzburg. Unusually for him, the masses for Lent were composed without commission. The fourth mass heard here, the Missa pro Quadragesima, composed in February 1794, is a true reform mass: It is characterized by simplicity, puritanical expression, rationally kept instruments and a close connection to the Gregorian melodic treasure
