Unfortunately, the work of Leonid Polovinkin (1894-1949) is almost forgotten today; in the 1920s he was one of the most prominent representatives of the Russian avant-garde. His music in this period is characterized by a polemical attitude towards romantic or impressionistic spellings and traditional genre systems. Here he is close to the aesthetic tendencies of Satie and the Group de Six, which had been propagated in Paris shortly before. After he had already worked at different theaters in St. Petersburg before he became musical director of the Moscow children's theater of Natalija Sac in 1926. This activity, but also the increased pressure of the Stalinist regime, led to a significant simplification of his musical expression. From then on, he mainly created incidental music, operas and ballet for children, which despite his musical qualities could not contribute to Polovinkin's lasting fame, so that he was quickly forgotten after his death. Anait Karpova introduces us to some highly interesting piano compositions by Polovinkin.
