"Nothing but an exercise for composers and players, and a quite indefinite, further on nothing aiming at the ear": one can only hope that the one who made this statement in 1771 came to a more differentiated judgement when he heard masterpieces like Haydn's D major concerto with its famous finale "all'ungherese". In the late baroque period the genre had indeed fallen into discredit: the style of the pre-classical transitional period was a little superficial - and of carefree cheerfulness!Andreas Staier plays on a fortepiano by Monika May, Marburg, 1986, replica of an original instrument by Walter, Vienna, 1785.this title was first published in 2004.
