"People today know too little about the wonderful music of Francesco Foggia, although it had a decisive influence on the heyday of the Roman Baroque. Foggia's vesper palms reflect the majestic character of the buildings where Foggia spent most of his artistic career: Santa Maria Maggiore, San Giovanni in Laterano and San Lorenzo in Damaso. Like most of his contemporaries, Foggia opted for a frequent use of quotations from the psalmody of Gregorian chant within a concertante setting where movement, brilliance and rhythmic invention predominate: similarities with Monteverdi's Vespers are striking. The musicians on this recording around Bernhard Pfammatter inspire with sensual and brilliant voices, rhythmic commitment and sweeping phrasing. • Le Monde de la Musique
