Far from each other in style and time of composition, these two sonatas are only seemingly in contrast: The cello sonata shows a romantic, bittersweetly melancholic tone and classical formal language, while the piece for viola, with its tragic accents and full of terrifying fear of death, clearly stands out from the earlier work. Both compositions, however, show their inner coherence in their joint sound and thus provide proof of the coherence in the work of a composer who was undeniably one of the greatest masters of the 20th century.
