Jascha Horenstein was born in 1898 as the thirteenth of sixteen children in a music-loving Jewish family in Kiev. He found his way through Königsberg and Vienna at first to Berlin, where he made his first recordings with the Philharmonisches Orchester in 1928/29. • The recordings featured in this collection audibly illustrate this exceptional conductor’s life and career. Beginning with the first recording for gramophone of Gustav Mahler’s “Kindertotenlieder”, they continue with the interesting Paris recordings of Hindemith’s “Mathis” Symphony and his collaboration with the Bamberg Symphony Orchestra. The spotlight shines throughout on the studio recordings made in Vienna and Baden-Baden. The programme is rounded off by the recordings with the London Symphony Orchestra from the early 1960s.
