"Let us thank the 'Force of Destiny' that this opera is doing so well in Rome! With so many flaws and so many absurdities in the text book, it is a real miracle that the theater's impresario did not die!" This mocking commentary on his opera "La forza del destino" comes from Giuseppe Verdi himself, even though this was the second, revised version. It came out on February 20, 1869 at the La Scala in Milan, and was received no less enthusiastically than the world premiere in St. Petersburg in 1862. • Verdi's "La forza del destino" is an adventure story, a story about unwavering persecution and relentless strokes of fate, about faith, renunciation and finally death and forgiveness. On their way through this story, the protagonists meet fascinating people at different locations and anticipate the modern idea of road movies in the opera. • Characterized by large solo numbers and long, difficult duets, "La forza del destino" places the highest demands on all participants. The present production with a top-class singer ensemble under the direction of Zubin Mehta meets these demands in impressive musical and acting terms.
