In the surroundings of the papal court in Avignon, not only intrigues and intrigues, but of course also art and music flourished during the papal schism in the 14th century. Probably for the papal chapel in Avignon, in the year 1349, one of the oldest completely conserved polyphonic mass settings of the music history was originated. This magnificent work is dedicated to the Virgin Mary and in this recording is placed in the context of a service in a nunnery. The Mass is framed for this purpose and meaningfully supplemented by other works from the early Ars Nova, such as the motet Impudenter circumivi by Philippe de Vitry. The five ladies of the De Caelis ensemble, conducted by Laurence Brisset, transpose the music of the unknown composer of the Missa Tournai so sensitively and profoundly that the majesty and grandeur of the great Gothic cathedrals seems to have actually become sound.
