opis
Andreas Romberg numbers among those musicians of the past who are forgotten today. Although he was celebrated as a violin virtuoso and composer during his lifetime, his fame did not earn him a lasting place in music history – which often judges unjustly. Bonn, Hamburg, and Gotha were his career stations. He wrote his Messiah in 1793 while still in Bonn and later performed it in Hamburg, his new place of work, in 1800. He clearly regarded it as his main work and his favorite one as well, and he repeatedly occupied himself with it, returning to it for revisions. Our recording premiere of this impressive and stirring work at the same time marks the beginning of a musical monument series to be presented and released by cpo in cooperation with the ZEIT Foundation and Deutschlandradio: Musica sacra Hamburgensis 1600-1800. Exemplarily selected compositions interpreted by renowned ensembles from the field of early music will serve to convey something of the variety and the special qualities of the sacred music composed in Hamburg from the early modern period to the beginning of the romantic era. So get ready for an exciting series of discoveries!
