Lionel Handy’s commitment to expanding the cello repertoire has resulted not only in his commissioning and premiering new works, but also in discovering neglected older repertoire. Indeed three works on this disc have never been recorded before. • Recorded at the Royal Academy of Music this disc features works from Ethel Smyth, Elizabeth Maconchy, Elisabeth Lutyens and Rebecca Clarke. • The compositions of Lutyens are characterised by textural economy and organisational rigour. The cello plays a significant part in many of her pieces for chamber forces. A wide knowledge of the music of Stravinsky and serial techniques has not resulted in slavish copying, but has helped Lutyens to forge an individual voice.
